LEIKANGER: Fjord swimmers from Sogn made the most of the last Sunday in Advent taking to the icy waters of their fjord, the mighty Sognefjord. The arena was Leikanger, the backdrop serious winter and the mood ecstatic.

The fjord scenery was draped in white after the recent snow and the day before winter solstice. For winter swimmers, it was perfect. Sogn Fjord Swimming Club has had a series of Advent Sunday winter dips in three municipalities: Leikanger, Vik and Balestrand.

Dippers started off at the Sognefjord Hotell in Leikanger at the end of November and have since toured testing the waters at Fresvik and Kvamsøy before ending back at Leikanger for their final dip. It has been the perfect warm-up for five of the fjord swimmers who will be heading for Winter Swimming World Championships in Slovenia in January. The picturesque mountain village of Bled will be cold, as a host town for a world championship in winter swimming should be. Sogn in winter clothing is not far behind.

Clear water, blue skies and snow-capped mountains proved to be exhilarating for the eager swimmers. Several of them swam and counted 40-70 strokes in the chilling waves before they climbed out onto land again and jogged to the sauna at the Sognefjord Hotell. Four rounds in the Sognefjord were fought by the hardy swimmers, impressive for a December day in the fjords of Norway on the last Sunday of Advent.
